I agree! We have been a non profit childcare centre offering quality, reliable, affordable childcare for 28 years.............we are in a school. I always thought this to be a great thing for families but now it seems we have so many hurdles just to stay in business and keep our quality staff's jobs. Some of our staff have been with us 15 years, what will happen to them? Childcare is not as stable or cute and cuddly when other "agencies and school boards" get involved.
I really wish Premier McGuinty had thought about the small businesses that would be forced to shut their doors due to the FDK initiative. Although it is a great thought, it needed a followthrough business plan that supported all involved NOT PUT SO MUCH ADVERSITY and mistrust in our communities.
I believe it should have been an extension of the businesses that are in schools not an extinction of them by telling the school boards to make up their own rules and put stipulations on non profit childcare centres to squeeze them out of schools so they can take over.
If that had happened, stating the rooms we are using are protected and not "up for grabs" the childcare community would have fully supported the chance to be part of an amazing forward thinking project.

What do our staff do?
What do the families that have counted on our care do?
What happens to the non profit agencies?
What happens to families that cannot afford what the school boards will be charging?

Childcare is a necessity to keep society running. It's not just about the parents of today, it's about the parents and family of tomorrow.

Thanks for all of the hard work to get this small but necessary increase to the transitional funding. Our centre will convert to full Day Kindergarten in 2013 and will need assitance with renovations. However, I have just heard from our city consultant that daycares in schools will not be eligible for funding assistance. While we know there is a need in the community for care of younger children, there seem to be impossible hurdles to provide this care. We're very concerned that even long established centres like ours will find it difficult to remain sustainable.

ECE's are qualified EDUCATORS. That's why they are called early childhood educators. They educate children on every level. Dudeman you made some of the most ignorant comments I have ever heard. There is far more to being an ECE than just watching a child. I'm pretty sure every babysitter I ever had sat me in front of the TV, played one game of hide and seek with me and fed me pizza every time. ECE's are far from glorified babysitters. The reason you can do anything in life is because you learned it during the first few years of your life. Someone needed to educate you in those early years. ECE's make sure every child can be educated and monitored for developmental issues. I'm sure a camp counselor could care less what happens at the end of the day.

My question is:
there is $869 million going towards children 0-3.8 years old, with $1.5 billion dollars going towards children between 4-5 years old...how does that seem fair?
Shouldn't there actually be MORE going into children between 0-3.8 years old, as it covers a wider age range AND all research shows that the first 6 years are the most impostant, not JUST 4-5 years old?

I am impressed that Hon Laurel Broten states that funds for child care have been increased 63% over the past few years, however I feel she has not addressed the issue around child care as it stands now and will in the near future. How does our current government view child care?? What can be done to ensure child cares stay open to provide service for the families that have children younger than 3.8 years of age. Many in the ECE field are concerned for their jobs, concerned for the children and families. We need a directive that outlines a future for families. children and teachers working the ECE field.
Why is the Liberal government avoiding these questions? We all have a right to know what is happening to the future of our children, families and the ECE field.

I did not get to attend the meeting as hoped. Unfortunately my day was rearranged when my brother who was watching my son said he couldn't manage. However I would like to continue getting emails of these events. At the moment I am confused about the situation of fighting for daycare centres to stay open when I can't even afford to put my son in one and after months of communcatiing or trying to communicate with different heads of Peel Region, Im finding it's a lost cause, our children seem to be the least thing on the agenda and I honestly don't have the strength any more to battle with them.
