Child Care Advocates: Child Care System Faces Collapse

January 7, 2010

Toronto, Ont. – Child care advocates will make deputations to the Community Development and Recreation Committee on the impact of cuts to child care subsidies.

In 2006, the McGuinty government took a one-time federal payment, spread it over four years and included that funding into Ontario’s core child care budget. Those funds will expire this year.

The City has stated that “should the Province fail to provide additional resources to maintain existing services they would need to cut 5000 subsidies (21%)by January 2012.”

The impact on the child care sector would be catastrophic.

  • Child care centres will have empty child care spaces
  • They will be forced to layoff staff and increase parent fees
  • Many centres will close within months. All will be vulnerable.

Selected Quotes from Deputations:
It would be devastating for our families in Central and North Etobicoke if we were forced to close”, Ann Farrell, Program Manager, First Stage Child Care

Cutting 5000 child care spaces is not acceptable. Now, more than ever, we need to stand together and hold the Province accountable” Cindy McCarthy, Chair, City of Toronto Child Care Committee and Executive Director, Terry Tan Child Care.

Quite simply, drastic cuts to child care subsidies could cause a catastrophic collapse of our child care programs” Jane Mercer, Toronto Coalition for Better Child Care.

McGuinty government is killing us .What do they think of the many people who rely on daycare, they also would be forced to quit their jobs.I am a home care provider working with an agency and have seen in the last few years daycare dropping because of the lack of finds into daycare. Working parents deserve better than this.

I guess the McGuilty government, yes I said McGuilty! doesn’t want moms to work I guess he wants to make cuts to child care so he can increase the cases of welfare recipients. Shame on you. McGuinty is letting our children down and not intrested in helping those that are helping themselves.

Typical Liberal flip flopping. They bring in Early learning, but they don’t fund it properly. These guys need to get out of the dark ages and realize that full day care should be the norm

The Ontario public is my major source of concern and frustration. From the implementation of a full day of learning in the face of a massive deficit to the impact of that same program impacting on health care etc etc. DNA revisions childcare closures, ECE job loss and of course the supposed urban myth that at the root of it all is The Teachers Federation, the politicians and beaurocrats who ultimately are seeking power instead of serving the best interest of the people THESE SAME PEOPLE WHO PAY THE PRICE NO MATTER WHAT. We need to launch a public information campaign in short order. We need to be savy, not stupid, sheep.
