Remembering Ev McKee (1928 – 2018)

Recently the childcare advocacy movement lost one of its most ardent advocates when Ev McKee passed away in Toronto in her 90th year.  Ev’s twin passions were her family and the childcare movement in Ontario.  Many of us will recall her tireless work and advocacy on behalf of children, high quality child care, and early childhood educators in Ontario.  She was a founding member of Action Daycare which, in turn, was a key organizer of the Ontario Coalition for Better Child Care in 1981.  Ev was loved and appreciated by co-workers and parents at Jesse Ketchum Child Care Centre.  An early graduate of the Institute for Child Study, Ev was one of the first to demonstrate that professionalism includes well-informed advocacy.  She was persistent and never wavered in her commitment to advocacy toward universally accessible, high quality child care for all.  She was honoured for her dedication as the co-recipient of the Constance E. Hamilton Award in 1990 in recognition of her actions that had a “significant impact on securing equitable treatment for women in Toronto, either socially, economically or culturally.”

OCBCC is honoured that the family requested donations in her memory to the Ontario Coalition for Better Child Care 489 College Street, Suite 206, Toronto, Ontario M6G 1A5, or to the Church of the Holy Trinity in lieu of flowers.
