Halton daycare complaint sent to the province expose gaps

Regional health officials admit they do not know the outcome of complaints about unlicensed daycares that were referred to the Ministry of Health. Matt Ruf, director of health protection for Halton Region, said, “They are the lead agency for dealing with these complaints.”  However, Education Minister Liz Sandals admits they have no power to investigate health concerns, only the number of children being cared for.

This highlights the gaps in regulation and inter-agency communication surrounding unlicensed child care. Andrea Calver, coordinator for the Ontario Coalition for Better Child Care said, “It's impossible to know the extent of health and safety concerns in unregulated home daycares because no one is checking.”
