Provinces leading on child care as federal cash begins to flow

Expansion of child care in Ontario created 48% of the new spaces in Canada, according to Martha Friendly from the Toronto based Childcare Resource and Research Unit which has been tracking national trends since 1992. Ontario's successful growth reflects the importance of increased public funding and dedicated policy. However, median parent fees are rising faster than inflation in most Canadian cities outside Quebec with Toronto at $1,212 per month for a preschooler. The 2017 federal budget promised a national data strategy which should include information about who is using child care and the quality of services.
