On December 19, 2013, Minister of Education proposed regulatory changes, which are subject to a 45 day comment period.
The proposed regulation changes directly affect children, communities, RECEs and child care centres.
By completing the short survey, we can gain a better understanding on how the child care community feels about the proposed changes to ratios, mixed groupings and staffing.

A: Ontario should add another RECE per age group for children under 4
A: I would not want to adapt to this model

A: Some of the changes are good and allow operators much more flexibility. But I feel the 2-4 ages grouping would not be the best model as developmental there are huge differences. Perhaps a 1:6 model for 2 to 2.5 yrs olds or 1:10 for 3.5 years and up.
A: Ratios should stay the same (ie 1 RECE per group)
A: The space can be converted with ease
A: The space can be converted with additional funding
A: le 2/3 des employés des centres éducatifs devraient être des RECE! Faire reconnaitre notre profession et offrir des services de qualité adaptés aux besoins de la clientèle devraient être les objectifs principaux du gouvernement

A: If these changes happen where are we going to get qualified RECE’s from? A lot of them have crossed over to the school board due to hours and pay…we are a field of professionals that the Government over looks.
If children aged 1-4 are going to be grouped together what happens to the quality care? Helping the children learn through play will be put on the back burner as those groups require different experiences to develop and learn according to their ages. These early years are very if not the most important ones for children and the government should not ignore this.
A: While I like the idea of ‘’mixed age groups’ for centre locations because they have the amazing opportunity to allow siblings to ‘grow up’ together in a program, to develop leaders within group settings as the older children nurture and lead the younger peers my concern with the the SIZE of the group being 20 children in a classroom as well as the % of children under 2 being allowed to be 8 children …. knowing how centre care works each Fall this means that there will be huge transitions into this classroom of children who are only 1 years of age who need A LOT of support and comfort and are not going to get it in a room packed with 20 children the other 12 who are likely to just be barely over the 2 requirement … IMO it would be much more management ‘group size’ to limit those programs using MIXED AGE GROUPS to 10 in the program MAX!

A: With the shortage of RECE’s working in the childcare field (daycare centres), now that the RECE’s are working in the school boards, how do we continue to staff our centers with qualified RECE’s? I do agree if the ratio’s change, we need to have the ratios of RECE’s increased, however many organizations are finding it difficult to find qualified and experienced teachers.
