A: I think the new ratios are scary and many RECEs out there are worried for the children and what kind of care we will be able to provide to such precious little children. It is hard enough meeting all the needs of the children add on less staff and more children some kids ate not going to get the quality they deserve and that patents pay for. These children are learning to potty train sit in a chair share toys feed themselves sleep independent and many other things. I would like whoever is making these ratios to come to where I work for 2 days and tell me that they can do it … Abc day nursery of Windsor

A: I hope safety has been addressed. It is very difficult for one single person to safely take care of 5 children of the age of 12-18 months on their own. Often parents that have multiples will have other care takers with them to help them out.

A: There is ample research supporting the benefits of well educated ECE-s in a classroom, the importance of space and reasonable ratios and group size in early childhood classrooms. Why is our wealthy province refusing to acknowledge the extensive research findings? It is our responsibility to provide good quality, safe evironments for our children. It is obvious how much the safety of our 1-2 year olds would be compromised by this “modernization” effort.

A: Rural childcare has challenges and the mixed age grouping could open spaces for children – very positive. However it will take experts in the field to make it work. Knowledge of child development should be a mandatory for all staff.

Q: 4. Do you have any further comments on any of the proposed regulation changes?

A: I don’t think that these changes are going to bring the results that the government is anticipating. I believe that by replacing the DNA with the Modernization Act, all they are doing is taking away the quality care measures that were in place, and replacing them with cost-saving measures that will do nothing to improve the quality of care, or the fact that Canada is rated as the 21st out of 25 countries by the United Nations.
