Child Care Watch April 2008
An Introduction from Jenny Robinson
First let me say that I am thrilled to have been given the opportunity to take on the responsibilities of Executive Director for the OCBCC. I had the privilege of working closely with the Coalition during my time as Director of Advocacy for YWCA Canada. I am looking forward to re-newing old relationships, establishing new ones and working to build a strong provincial coalition that has a voice and a place at the decision making table.
My first day on the job was Provincial Budget day. We participated in the “lock-up” where groups are given an advance look at the budget – but literally locked up until the budget is released. The 2008 Budget was a true disappointment, as early learning and child care was not even mentioned. It demonstrated to me that the McGuinty government is not taking us seriously and that we have work to rejuvenate the issue with MPPs and Ministers and the public.
We have to let them know that we still want a universal comprehensive public system of early learning and care for all children in Ontario not a patchwork of inadequately funded programs. And most importantly, we don’t want corporate child care!
We will continue to use our campaign “Its Time for Public Child Care” to move our message - so please join us in our Lobby Day on June 2 and in our Friday Phone Fun activities - Ontario families are depending on us!
