Federal Government Moving to Ban Plastic Baby Bottles with Chemical "Bisphenol A"

On April 19th, the Federal Government moved to ban plastic bottles containing a controversial chemical.

After a public consultation period, the Federal Government may restrict the use of products containing Bisphenol A.

Last fall, the OCBCC supported a family fun event sponsored by Environmental Defence at Queen’s Park to draw attention to toxins used in everyday plastics, including Bisphenol A.

The chemical is found in hard plastics, including plastic water bottles with a number “7” on the bottom. Baby bottles were a large focus of the campaign to ban Bisphenol A because heating plastic bottles can cause more of the chemical to leach out.

For parents, alternatives to plastic bottles are Bisphenol A - free products or stainless steel and glass.

The chemical is also found in the lining of tin cans and many consumer products.
