The Child Care Human Resource Sector Council have released: You Bet We Still Care! Highlights Report, a survey of employers and employees in Canada’s licensed full-day child care centres in 2012.

Over 4,600 surveys were completed to give a detailed overview of the current state of child care in Canada, addressing wages, parent fees, retention and quality of programming.

This report shows that Quebec has the lowest parent fees and highest staff pay. The parent fees are by far the lowest in the country, at $152 a month. Additionally, Quebec’s median early childhood educator wage is the highest at $19.13 an hour.

Job retention is still a major issue, as 23.1% of those surveyed are in the process of looking for a new job. Looking for higher pay, wanting career advancement, and dissatisfaction with the workplace were the main reasons cited for looking to change jobs.

Continued in-depth research will allow for a full understanding of current trends in all areas of the child care sector.
