The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) is urging Lambton County councillors to reject a staff report calling for the closure of Coronation Park Day Nursery. County staff recommended the closure of Coronation in light of the Ontario government cutting its funding to the county by $1.3 million a year.
A total of 100 children are in the main day care program, while 69 are in the before-and-after-school program.
“(Parents are) worried,” says Mary Aikin, president of CUPE Local 2926. “Why is it only recommended a closure without looking at other options?” Sarnia Mayor Mike Bradley has echoed these concerns. He has put forward a motion that no decision on the future of the day care be made until a special public meeting is held with another process for public input through social media.
