NDP Education Critic Peter Tabuns' Statement on Child Care Crisis

Legislative Assembly of Ontario

On Tuesday March 20th, 2012 NDP Education critic Peter Tabuns made a statement in the house about the child care crisis in Ontario.

This statement is a follow-up to a previous question on Feb 9 and a question on Nov 23 as well as two community forums in his riding. Also thanks to Leader Andrea Horwath for her participation in the March 1 Town hall meeting in Peel.  Ontario's NDP have done a tremendous amount to put pressure on the government to protect child care programs.

Mr. Peter Tabuns: Speaker, next week, here in this chamber, we’ll be receiving the budget from the McGuinty government. All over Ontario, families are waiting to see if their child care centres will get the funding they need to survive. Failure on the part of this government to put in place a good transition plan for us to go into all-day kindergarten has meant financial crisis for many child care centres. We face the closure of those centres.

For many single parents who are waiting for that budget, they know what they’re facing is child care or welfare.

Once again, I take this opportunity to ask the government to put the funds in the budget so that our child care centres are protected, so that our families are protected.
