Ontario cracks down on dangerous, unregulated daycares

The Globe and Mail

Ontario will introduce legislation in an effort to address unlicensed home child care, giving new powers to inspectors to close unsafe locations right away as well as give “hefty” fines to caregivers who have broken the rules.

The proposed changes will also change the maximum number of children for licensed home child care from five to six, creating “an incentive for unregulated daycares to become licensed”. This change is believed to create 6,000 new spaces.

Under the proposed act, provincial officials could levy fines of up to $100,000 for each infraction and up to $250,000 for serious violations.
