Kenora City Council Votes “Yes” on Closure of City-Run Child Care

Kenora Online

On Monday August 13th, Kenora City Council voted for the closure of Castle of Learning Children’s Discovery Centre and the city-run before-and-after school. The decision comes after outcry from parents, community members and early childhood educators.  This closure will affect 200 children - 24 child care spots and 180 before-and-after school children.

The council hopes to give the job of child care to the province and Castle of Learning Children’s Discovery Centre will be included in the Ministry of Education “take over of day cares”. A press release by the council states, “they'd received assurances both school boards -- Keewatin-Patricia and Kenora Catholic -- had provided them with assurances the service would continue in January, after the Castle of Learning was closed at the end of the year”.

Mayor Dave Canfield believes that parents and their children will be looked after. The OCBCC asks - How?
