On December 19, 2013, Minister of Education proposed regulatory changes, which are subject to a 45 day comment period.
The proposed regulation changes directly affect children, communities, RECEs and child care centres.
By completing the short survey, we can gain a better understanding on how the child care community feels about the proposed changes to ratios, mixed groupings and staffing.
Do you like this survey?
A: I am against this changes. I think the currient ratios is fine. If the government wants to change, please think about the staff’s salary. They are very low paid. They deserve to pay more.

A: Ontario should add another RECE per age group for children under 4
A: I would not want to adapt to this model
A: Keep the 0-4 year olds with the same current ratios; it’s safer for all!
If anything, make the staff to child ratio lower; not higher.

A: The space does not have the capacity
A: i like the mixed age grouping if it helps the centre to fill vacancies and also for some children who are senior preschools and have a birthday in january or february it helps them to be with jr schoolage and could be developmentally better for them. Not fond of the school age ratio moving to 20 per one staff or fdk having a higher ratio. The fdks are still preschool in my mind.

A: In Childcare it is difficult to separate roles and duties, there is overlaps in who is responsible for what except that of curriculum planning. Why not hire RECE’s, the only reason we have the non ECE positions is due to funding. I have many RECE staff working in Non ECE classifications. Give these RECE jobs!

A: Since childcare and schools are now under the same ministry, I have no issue with the ratios for Kindergarten and School Age children being similar in daycare and classroom settings. But the under 4 age group should maintain the old ratios.
The School age 2-tiered age groupings separating children ages 6-8 and 9-12 would not work in our centre. It’s an arbitrary dividing line. We would lose money capping our 10+ program room to 20 children. Stick with school age being grades 1-6 with group sizes of 30 and 2 staff, at least 1 RCEC. Do not change school age ratios or group sizes.

A: There has been no consideration given for children with special needs or children who are delayed.
RECEs need more time to do all the required tasks – documenting and programming, cleaning and providing appropriate resources and communication with family when they are working alone.
